  • DMTF Releases the Initial Version of PLDM for Redfish Device Enablement and Related Specifications

DMTF has released the initial version of its Platform Level Data Model (PLDM) for Redfish Device Enablement Specification (RDE) specification. The RDE specification describes the operation and format of request messages (also referred to as commands) and response messages, designed to be delivered using PLDM messaging.  Bringing Redfish management to devices, which may have a small memory footprint and limited processing capabilities, the specification defines the use of Binary Encoded JSON (BEJ) to help significantly compress message size. Using RDE, the management controller will encode the message into a binary format (BEJ) and communicate it using PLDM as the transport to an appropriate device for servicing.

In addition to the RDE specification, an updated PLDM for Monitoring & Control version 1.2 adds new commands to obtain device Schema data, which is supported and applicable to RDE operations. The Monitoring & Control Specification also provides updates to event message generation - as a new polling method for events has been included along with enabling a heartbeat keepalive message to asynchronous events – both of these are added to the 1.2 version. 

RDE is developed by DMTF’s Platform Management Components Intercommunications (PMCI) Working Group, which defines standards to address “inside the box” communication and functional interfaces. It can be used in conjunction with other PMCI standards to provide a comprehensive, common architecture for improved communication between management subsystem components.
