  • New DMTF Technology Diagram Available

A new animated diagram illustrating DMTF Management Technologies is available on our website. The diagram provides a high-level view of how DMTF’s standards simplify management at each level of today’s complex infrastructures, including Cloud environments.

At the bottom of the illustration are long-standing physical components of the data center, which the admin manages via Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) and the Storage Networking Industry Association’s (SNIA’s) Storage Management Initiative (SMI-S).

Management of the Virtualization layer is supported by standards such as Open Virtualization Format (OVF) and Virtualization Management (VMAN). The Cloud infrastructure is managed by the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) and Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI). And end user devices are managed via the Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) suite of specifications.

The key standards in the toolbox including Common Information Model (CIM), Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM), and Web Services Management (WS-MAN) define the objects upon which most other DMTF standards are based (or they include mappings to reference these objects).

The DMTF also specifies infrastructure management solutions for “inside the box.”  These include the Common Diagnostic Model (CDM), Platform Management Components Intercommunication (PMCI) and System Management BIOS (SMBIOS). SMASH and SMI-S are used for management within the server and storage hardware, as well.

DMTF standards enable effective management of the entire ecosystem. For more information, visit the DMTF’s Standards and Technologies page.
